Olympian Darren Chiacchia sustained a traumatic brain injury in a fall while eventing in 2008. The accident changed Darren’s life. Darren joined riders4helmets on International Helmet Awareness Day 2012 to discuss his accident, where he is at now, and why accidents can happen to anybody including Olympians. When my daughter started riding, one of our first purchases was a helmet. Nobody at our barn rode without one! Our trainer was adamant about safety first. When my daughter was 14, she fell over a jump and landed on her head (the horse had tried to finish the course, but he was injured). She is alive today because of her helmet! I still have that helmet…battered, but a reminder of what might have been without it.
