Six months ago the San Francisco Mounted Police Department joined their counterparts in New York, Chicago and other cities in taking the decision to replace their police hats with helmets. While their had not been an injury in the unit since 2008 (an office fell from his horse but recovered fully) the incident got administrators attention.
From the San Francisco Chronicle: “Just like riding a motorcycle, it can be a dangerous endeavor,” said the unit’s Lt. Mike Favetti. “Personally, the helmet’s not as comfortable as wearing a soft cap, but if I fell off the horse, I’d be very glad to have it.”
While a cloth hat might be traditional it provides absolutely no protection to an officer in the event of a fall and Riders4Helmets salutes the San Francisco Mounted Police and all of the other Mounted Police Units around the country, who have taken the decision to put their officers safety first.
