Lexington, KY (April 16th, 2012)–This month, the popular helmet awareness campaign Riders4Helmets.com is celebrating its two-year anniversary of educating equestrians on all aspects of helmet safety, by way of a monumental giveaway. Lucky equestrians could win one of 50 helmets, which have a combined value of approximately $10,000, or the highly sought after iPad3 (the new iPad) 4G + WiFi.

“In recognition of our two-year anniversary we wanted to do something really special to thank the many equestrians who have supported the riders4helmets campaign,” said Lyndsey White, Riders4Helmets founder. “The campaign has grown bigger than we ever could have imagined, and we are proud to know that it has made a difference in the lives of many people around the globe.”

Visitors to the Rolex KY 3DE (April 26-April 29) may visit the Riders4Helmets area in the “old” indoor arena to register for the giveaway, receive helmet safety literature, and, have the opportunity to participate in helmet fitting demonstrations. Equestrians who are unable to attend Rolex can still register for the giveaway by visiting www.riders4helmets.com/register-for-giveaway/. The registration closes midnight (eastern standard time USA) on Sunday May 6th, 2012. Riders4Helmets horse and rider logo wear will also be available for purchase at Rolex, the proceeds of which will be used to fund educational events such as helmet safety symposiums.

“We are sincerely grateful to the sponsors of both the helmet and iPad giveaway”, said Chad Mendell, Riders4Helmets. “Without the support of generous sponsors, Riders4Helmets would not be able to offer these amazing prizes and educational events.

After organizing National Helmet Awareness Day held in the USA in 2010, the campaign went on to organize International Helmet Awareness Day in 2011 in which over 500 equestrian retailers participated. Riders4Helmets has also hosted three Riders4Helmets Safety Symposia. Plans are already in the works for International Helmet Awareness Day 2012, and a 4th Riders4Helmets Safety Symposium, both to be held summer 2012.

Riders4Helmets was founded in early 2010 after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident. King Dye, who remained in a coma for a month following her accident, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and is still undergoing rehabilitation.

Bucked off my horse onto the pavement–tried to hit the grass. Failed. Hit my back and head. Fractured three vertebrae but my head came through with flying colors as I was wearing my helmet.

  2. Orville Hahn says:

I love the fun and playful way you get me to think about life and death. Living the rest of my life in a wheelchair or sucking some pureed food through a straw.

I have re-posted this page my blog,Facebook and twitter.
Wishing everyone at Riders 4 Helmets all of God’s blessings.

  3. Tracey says:

13 year old daughter on her horse Dreamer, green broke, went to get her to trot and she bolted. Both went threw a 3 wire fence, Dreamer hit the ground with Amber on top. Amber spent 30 days in Sanford hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Had to learn to walk, eat, and much therapy. She still has some issues but is coming along. If it weren’t for her helmet she would not be with us today. This happened 1-1/2 years ago.

  4. Jennifer says:

Helmets have saved my life more than once. I always seem to always land near or toward the back of my head and have had many scars and dents on my helmets. I will continue to wear my helmet and will continue to encourage others to do so too. I found that purchasing a helmet is cheaper than paying for a hospital bill.

  5. Erin says:

my horse spooked at a barking dog on a trail ride, he spun, i fell on a bed of rocks… my helmet saved my life besides a couple bloody elbows and knees and extreme soreness for weeks. If my head had hit those rocks without my helmet i would have been a goner! I would love to win this and start riding again!

  6. Sandy Harkey says:

I was a 4-H leader till 1997 and in 1995 our club rule was you had to have a helmet to ride also I approached other clubs and state on the Telenet with other leaders. State did make it manditory for contest clases which made me very proud. I still wear a helmet when I ride and so do my Grandchildren. The movie Every Time – Every Ride is the one we used to show the other counties and other club to demonstrate what could happen if not wearing a helmet. Accidents do happen…….

  7. Lesley McBain says:

Five years ago this July, I had a horse go down on the racetrack in Ohio, where I worked as an exercise rider. If it had not been for my helmet, I would not be around to write this post, as I am convinced that it saved my life. I was unconcious for 56 hours and spent 8 weeks in the hospital and still have some physical issues due to traumatic brain injury( hemorraghic stroke). Don’t ever leave home without it!! (your helmet) I used to ride 3 day event at the intermediate and advanced level as well which is where I found out the importance of the helmet in the first place. You don’t need it until you need it!!

  8. Lesley Ballard says:

Helmets are so important in this sport. You never know what may happen, no matter how confident you are in your ability and your horse. Accidents happen. I would also like to stress the importance of replacing a helmet after an impact fall. It’s not worth altering or losing your life by not utilizing one, no matter whether you are trail riding, just practicing in an arena or in eventing, wear it- it hurts a lot more If you don’t.
