Thank you to Bethany Vawter for sharing the following with us. Please read When Should I Replace My Helmet? (expiration dates) for advice on knowing when to purchase a new helmet.
“My helmet after a fall I took while in Kentucky for training for the Horsemanship Safety Association. I am a riding master at a camp and they sent me to Kentucky to get certified. On the first day, they wanted to make sure we could ride and the horses were pretty fresh. The horse tried to buck while cantering clockwise but I got him to stop. Then on the other lead, he bucked and turned which caused me to go over his shoulder.
I hit my head and was shocked but got on and made him canter. My head started to hurt worse and worse so we went to the ER. I had a mild concussion and contrecoup (an injury occurring on the side opposite the area that was impacted). My helmet was brand new because my previous one had just expired. I am super glad that I wore my new helmet because I cannot imagine how much worse it could have been. Please make sure you check the dates on your helmet!!”
