Riders4Helmets Top 10 Reasons To Wear A Helmet

#10 Modern helmets are cool! The excuse “they are not fashionable” can simply no longer be used. You can even pick a helmet in your favorite color. Don’t believe us, scroll on down…….

Pretty in Pink?…..How about the Charles Owen Pro II…..

Yee-haw. Western Rider or hitting the trail?…..How about the Troxel Cheyenne Rowdy……

True Blue Fan? (those of you living in KY will know exactly what we mean….awww come on, this was the closest thing to Wildcat Blue we could find). How about the GPA Speed’ Air…..

Can’t decide what to wear? Grab one in each color, so your helmet always co-ordinates your look :) . How about the Aegis Ussepa………

Saturday Night Fever? Break out your moves in bright white. How about the Ovation Protege….

Fancy creating you own helmet? How about a custom design from Samshield?…..

Looking for luxury? How about this brown and gold helmet from Antares-Sellier France……

#9 Wearing a helmet gives me “helmet hair”……well when you get out of bed in a morning you have “bed hair” and that became a hairstyle everyone wanted to copy! Maybe Tigi will launch a”helmet haircare” range and then everyone will want helmet hair….and besides Katie Holmes already has sported helmet hair and everyone thought that was trendy. Better yet….the equestrian version doesn’t cost a penny.

#8 Because this is what can happen to your head if you are not wearing a helmet and take an unfortunate tumble…..

#7 Wearing a ASTM/SEI certified helmet while riding, means you can concentrate on having a nice ride and not worry about your head.

#6 Wearing a helmet will greatly lessen the chance of you being one of approximately 12,000 equestrians who visit  emergency rooms each year as a result of head injuries sustained while riding.

#5 “The quality of helmets today leaves no excuse for not wearing one while riding. 20 years ago helmets were not as good as they are today. 100 years ago all we had was a cowboy hat. Today because of huge leaps in technology there are helmets that are not only comfortable but also provide ventilation and most importantly protect the head and brain” – Dr. Geoff Tucker.

#4 Think you are too good to need a helmet? WRONG. “The better you ride the harder you fall. Beginners fall off. Good riders get launched” – Jean White.

#3 Because at sometime, somewhere…..there will be a child watching you…..be a good role model. Role Model: someone worthy of imitation; every child needs a role model.

#2 Riding as a sport has a certain amount of inherent risk due to the fact that a rider’s head when mounted in the saddle may be up to 4m or 13ft above ground level and horses are capable of moving at considerable speeds and can be unpredictable. Reduce your risk and strap one on!

#1 Because we care….and so does your Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Son, Daughter…….so please stay safe and wear a helmet.

    Hi,
Just another situation that was completely unexpected(aren’t they all). Hacking out the other day on a lovely young riders horse, I had a serious fall. Horse had an honest spook and slipped on an asphalt road. Went down hard and hit my head. Mild concession, cat scan negative. Road rash and a severe head ache for 3 days!!
If I had not been wearing my Charles Owen i would not be writing this 10 days later! I have been a helmet wearer all my life and no one in my program gets on a horse for any reason, without one. It’s really sad that so many top riders and their staff take such unnecessary risks everyday. For what? Ego, pride, hair, too hot??
A close call me realize even more just how many lives my existance impacts. Family, friends, staff, owners, sponsors and myself!! Non hat wearers need to wake up and get with the program!!

Nr 4 has always been my favourite. Beginner riders fall off, good riders get launched!

  5. Ellie Murray says:

In the article about riders4helmets, that was forwarded to me, the date for National Helmet Awareness was June 11. Perhaps the article was wrong, because I see on your web site that it is July10. Too bad! The significance for me is that June 11 is my birthday. Raised on a ranch in Wyoming, I have been riding horses since before I can remember. On July 1,1997, I was jumping and had a horrible fall. My helmet was old, and didn’t provide all the protection it could have. I survived the fall, but sustained an intermediate closed head injury. What a long journey it has been!!! After 14 years, I am finally riding again. Praise the Lord!!! You can bet that I have a good helmet, now, and I will not teach anyone without one!

Ellie the date for the event in 2010 was July 10th, the date in 2011 was June 11th. It varies year on year so please check the website regularly for the 2012 date (will not be announced it until spring 2012). So sorry to hear of your head injury and glad to hear you are riding again! woohoo!
